Sugar rush: Christmas Eve busy for local businesses like Hawaiian Pie Co.
KALIHI, Hawaii - It's a busy Christmas Eve for businesses and local bakeries. This is the second busiest holiday for the Hawaiian Pie Company in Kalihi. The family-owned sweet shop opened early Tuesday morning.
The staff has been filling and baking all kinds of pies since about 5 a.m. Passion pear and caramel apple are the best sellers. Pumpkin custard and pineapple whip are also popular picks.
Manager Andrew Chun-Hori says, "It might be cliche to say, but I feel like there's a lot of love that goes into these pies. That, as well as family recipes that have been passed down, and our crust, which is a big part of the pie."
The pies are huge; most weigh three pounds! The Hawaiian Pie Company is off Waiakamilo Rd. and was open until 3 p.m. It is closed on December 25.
