HONOLULU (KITV) - Grocery shoppers in Waipahu now have a new option just in time for the holidays. Waikele Safeway is now open in the Waikele Shopping Center in the former Sports Authority space, next to Old Navy.

Shoppers wasted no time taking advantage of an expanded fresh produce department, deli, and full-service bakery. Residents said the area had limited options before Safeway opened. Kuulei Badua said, "They never had a Safeway, only had Foodland. I'm pretty sure people who live around this area are going to like to shop here. They have bargains; they have sale prices. It's a good company." Director Branden Ishikawa says the store's layout is the first of it's kind in Hawaii. "When the customers first enter our store, all they see is fresh produce, freshly made foods. They come in, and we have everything fresh and ready to go."

On opening day, customers filled their carts at the expanded deli and seafood counter, which displayed several different kinds of poke and fresh seafood. The bakery section had customers taking out their cameras to get a shot of the whimsical cakes, and custom creations. Ishikawa said the talented bakery staff would cater to custom orders. "We can go on holiday themes. If anybody comes with a special request, Santa Clause or Snowflakes, our cake decorators can do that for them or even for special occasions."

The company says the 50-thousand square-foot store will employ 130 employees and be open 24-hours a day.
