HONOLULU - Every year, Betty Enos checks in with her Humana insurance agent "to find out if anything's changed; are they adding or taking away anything?" she explains.

Enos does this to prepare for Medicare's Annual Election Period which runs from October 15 to December 7, 2019. Inos says she's good for 2020. "I'm not going to make changes because I'm satisfied with what I'm getting," she smiles.

Experts advise everyone to review their plan, because once the period ends, you can't make changes for a while. Jose Cabrera is a sales director at Humana, a "health and well-being company" that offers Medicare Advantage plans. He explains why it's important to pay attention to open enrollment: "That's the plan that you have until next year- what you've selected in this annual election period. So it's important to sit with someone and make sure things are right for you now."

Some companies offer public seminars and fairs to reach out to seniors. Humana has events at Pearlridge Center Mauka and a kiosk at both Pearlridge and Windward Mall. Agents can explain all the Medicare changes and rules for the upcoming year. Cabrera lists a few examples: "A copay may go up, it may go down. You might notice they added on a transportation benefit, or they might have taken it away."

To figure out what plan works for you, think about what you want to do during retirement. "There's a lot of programs that offer gym memberships, hearing benefits," Cabrera suggests. Different agencies offer different benefits, so you need to check with each one.

Also, consider how your health needs may have changed over the last 12 months. "Has their health changed from last to this year? Maybe your hearing is not as robust as it used to be," he says.

Experts say finding the best Medicare plan offerings to your needs will give you the best coverage at the best cost- helping you in Aging Well.
