Woman charged for luring Marshallese women to US for illegal adoptions
A 39-year-old woman was charged in federal court after being accused of luring Marshallese women to put their children up for adoption in the U.S.
KITV4 partners at Honolulu Civil Beat say 39-year-old Maki Takehisa of Arkansas is accused of luring pregnant women to fly from the Marshall Islands to the U.S. for the illegal adoptions.
One of the women involved said Takehisa promised to pay $10,000, but only got $6,000. Another woman said she was promised her child would be returned at the age of 18.
This violates the Compact of Free Association -- a treaty between the two countries that lets Marshallese citizens to travel to the U.S., unless it is for an adoption.
