Mayor Kirk Caldwell held a press conference on Saturday to announce the City's plans to allow the building of a new 140 unit affordable housing complex in Aiea.

The complex would be completed in 2023 and would be built on the land that used to be home to the Aiea Sugar Mill plant. It will have studio and one bedroom apartments available.

The 48-million-dollar project is being taken on by AEH Housing, which specializes in affordable housing.

For those interested in moving in, you have to be 62 years and over and under a median income of $52,000.

Some units will be as low as $600 a month while those who make more will pay up to $1000 per month.

"We're an aging population. The demand by our seniors are tremendous and they need more housing," said Mayor Kirk Caldwell at the press conference.

The developer expects this project will have a wait list for potential renters and maybe even a lottery to get in.
