Spinal cord injury leads Okada to new passion for painting
September is spinal cord injury awareness month, and Rehab Hospital of the Pacific held a fair that brought together vendors of physical therapy productions, occupational and physical therapists and patients together.
Among those attending was Dennis Okada. Okada, once a patient, now teaches patients who may have spinal cord injuries of their own how to paint.
Okada was a master waterman. He won a national championship in spearfishing. But a diving accident 20 years ago left him unable to walk.
However, it was an inability to walk that led him to his newfound love of painting.
"Every dive you jump in the water, you go down in the ocean, everything is different. Painting is similar, every painting is a challenging, every painting is different," said Okada.
