The United States Census Bureau has already begun preparing for its 2020 census.

Right now, crews are out verifying addresses, and you may have even had a canvasser knock on your door.

Hawaii regional technician for the census bureau Malissa Kaawa says that recruiting for canvassers here has been slower than usual.

She says the bureau will need "thousands" of applicants to canvas here in Hawaii.

The qualifications to be a canvasser are simple. One must be over 18 years old, a citizen of the United States, have a valid social security number and an email address.

They are taking applications through the end of 2019.

"Every island and every community, we will need thousands of people to apply for our jobs for next year when we conduct the non-response followup," said Kaawa.
