(Chaminade Athletics) - The Chaminade University women’s volleyball team is picked to finish second in the Pacific West Conference Coaches Poll which was released Wednesday.

The Silverswords received 124 points for a solid No. 2 billing in votes taken by all 12 PacWest coaches. The ’Swords, who received one first-place vote, were 18 points behind defending conference champion Azusa Pacific, which received 10 top votes.

Chaminade has nine more points than No. 3 Biola which also got a first-place vote.

“I understand just how talented our team is,” head coach Kahala Kabalis Hoke said. “With the experience of our seasoned returnees, we also understand the enormous responsibility of making sure to maximize every opportunity provided to us to make this season one to remember.”

The conference also released the Preseason All-PacWest Team. Seniors Emma Tecklenburg (Plano, Texas/Plano Senior), a first-team all-conference selection last year, and Alana Handy (Burlington, Wash./Bethune-Cookman Univ./Burlington-Edison HS), last season’s PacWest Newcomer of the Year and second team all-conference pick, were both voted by the coaches to the preseason team. The duo finished as the PacWest’s top two attackers, respectively, with Tecklenburg averaging 3.45 kills per set while Handy finished at 3.37.

Azusa Pacific middle blocker Julianne Miller was selected as the Preseason Player of the Year while Point Loma’s Cara Keturakis was the Preseason Setter of the Year. Sami Hover of Biola was the Preseason Libero of the Year.

The ’Swords, who last year earned their first postseason appearance since 2004, open the season with a pair of matches next Friday in the Hawai‘i Challenge. Chaminade faces Sonoma State in its 2:30 p.m. season debut followed by a 7:30 p.m. tilt against West Virginia State.
