(Hawaii Athletics) - The University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team opens its 2019 season with the 31st Hawaiian Airlines Rainbow Wahine Classic (Aug. 30 - Sept. 1). Coming to open their seasons in Honolulu are No. 21 San Diego, St. John's, and No. 13 Washington.

Head coach Robyn Ah Mow enters her third season at the helm of the Rainbow Wahine program. Last season, she led UH to a 18-9 overall record while finishing second in the Big West with a 14-2 record for the second straight season. She and her staff led Hawai'i to the program's 37th overall and 26th-consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance.

The Rainbow Wahine return seven letterwinners, but just one starter--senior setter Norene Iosia. Iosia was a pivotal key to UH's success last season as she expanded her role to include outside hitting duties combined with her normal setting responsibilities. She finished the year second in the NCAA with four triple-doubles while being second on the UH team with 477 assists, 212 kills, 301 digs, and 57 blocks. She recorded a team-high 16 double-doubles while also finishing third on the squad with 26 service aces.

Looking to fill the void left by the graduation of seven Rainbow Wahine (Tita Akiu, Natasha Burns, Casey Castillo, McKenna Granato, Angel Gaskin, Faith Ma'afala and Sarah Liva)  who all saw significant playing time. This year's team features nine newcomers--including five freshman and four Pac-12 transfers--who are all vying for a spot in the lineup. Look for several of the newcomers to make an immediate impact on the team.
