The Honolulu Police Department (HPD) spent more than $160,000 to send law enforcement backup to Mauna Kea last month.

HPD deployed 56 officers and some vehicles to the Big Island for a week.

The cost covers overtime, airfare, and shipping for the vehicles.

Chief Susan Ballard said sending officers over did not impact police service on O'ahu.

The State Attorney General's officer will reimburse HPD for all expenses.

Maui Police sent to help the Big Island last month racked up more than $68,000 in overtime.

As of August 8, Hawaii County reports it spent nearly $236,000 in law enforcement overtime since July 1.
