Five new replacement ambulances were traditionally blessed Wednesday.

Honolulu Emergency Medical Services (EMS) said it is vital that the public and their employees have ambulances that are reliable.

"Last year alone Honolulu EMS responded 95,000 calls, that’s a lot of miles on their vehicles," said Shayne Enright, Honolulu Emergency Services Dept. Spokesperson.

Some of the previous vehicles racked up 200,000 miles. The new replacement ambulances will be rolling out in the next couple of months, each costing around $175,000 each.

The replacement ambulances will be used in Oahu’s busiest district -- downtown -- but EMS anticipates there will be more by the end of the year.
