Two of three Maui fires fully extinguished Monday
Two of three Maui brush fires reported Sunday were fully contained and extinguished Monday morning, the Maui Fire Department reported.
The third fire, in Kihei, had grown from 80 to 300 to 500 acres overnight, and according to Maui officials the fire was 40% contained.
Maui firefighters battled the Kihei fire all night.
A portion of Honoapiilani Highway from Kuihelani Highway had remained closed Sunday night while fire crews worked to put out flames dangerously close to the south, Maalaea-bound lane. By Monday morning, the highway had reopened.
The size of the two Waikapu fires remained the same: 5 acres for the Waiko Road fire and 10 acres for the fire in Waikapu initially reported on the mauka side of Honoapiilani Highway and the Kahili Golf Course.
There have been no reports of injuries or structural damage. The cause of the fires remains under investigation.
Maui County Mayor Michael Victorino continued to ask residents and visitors to remain vigilant and informed.
