The Hilo Pony baseball team captured the 2019 Pony-13 World Series Championship in Whittier, California on Monday night.

Despite being down early, the team from Hawaii defeated Johnstown, Pennsylvania 10-6 to win this year's championship game. The boys from the Big Island scored six runs in the sixth inning to secure this year's victory.

But Hilo came in familiar with playing from behind. After falling early in the double-elimination tournament, the team had to win out or face elimination. "If someone is down, we go with that person and help them to get back up", said catcher Dominic Christensen.

"I think what was so special about this team that helped us to win this world series title was just the amount of energy this team has and morale that keeps our team going", added outfielder Braden Malani.

Hilo, the West Zone champions, have been on the road now for about three weeks.

"It was exciting, exciting but also exhausting", said head coach Shon Malani. He added, "but to finish the way they did I mean I'm so proud of these kids. They worked their tails off".

This is Hilo's first Pony-13 World Series title. The team is expected to arrive back home in Hilo on Wednesday afternoon at 1:45 p.m.
