Three UH men's volleyball greats set to again represent USA
HONOLULU – University of Hawai'i men's volleyball is well represented on the United States Pan American Games team with three players among the 12-man team while UH associate coach Milan Zarkovic will coach the squad.
Current Rainbow Warrior Colton Cowell is one of three outside hitters on the team. Former Warrior is Joe Worsley is one of two setters while Kupono Fey is the lone libero. The trio competed for the U.S., on the Pan American Cup team earlier this summer, which placed fifth in Colima, Mexico.
The Pan American Games officially opened on July 27 in Lima, Peru, however the men's volleyball competition begins July 31. The United States share pool play along with Brazil, Chile, and Mexico. The other pool consists of Argentina, Cuba, Peru, and Puerto Rico.
Former UH middle blocker Taylor Averill was UH's lone representative in the last Pan American Games in 2015 in Toronto, Canada. That team placed sixth among the eight teams.
The U.S. opens the tournament against Chile. The U.S. men last medaled at the Pan American Games in 2007, when they took silver. U.S. Men's teams have won four gold medals and three silver since the sport was introduced to the Games in 1955.
