'Ilima at Leihano hosts free, public Kupuna Wellness Fair
KAPOLEI, Hawaii - Hundreds of people are expected to attend a free, public fair on the West Side next weekend. It's at the senior living community 'Ilima at Leihano. It's aimed at SENIORS, but the WHOLE family can enjoy it.
Live dancers keeps the crowd entertained at 'Ilima at Leihano's yearly Kupuna Wellness Fair, while off stage, dozens of booths offer seniors all kinds of things. 'Ilima At Leihano's lead wellness coordinator Michelle Tanaka says important health and safety tips will be among the displays. "The Honolulu Police Department will be here doing a kupuna ID, Kapolei Eye Care will be doing a vision test. It's a one-stop-shop," Tanaka says.
Fairgoers can browse fun offerings like aromatherapy and clothes shopping as well. The senior facility is gearing up for the event again on July 20.
Tanaka explains that it fills an important need on the West side of Oahu. "We are one of the only communities out here, senior living-wise, and this is one of the only fairs that brings in vendors for all generations, not just kupuna [seniors]."
The front parking lot will be transforming into a senior fair, which is so popular it's doubled in size over the last three years.
'Ilima At Leihano resident Helen Yano goes every year. She says what she really likes is that her whole family can have a good time. Yano, age 88, says from experience, "It's a family outing, so the kupuna should all bring their children and grandchildren over."
Her daughter, Carla Kahiapo, says it lets her be a part of her mother's life there. She recalls what happened last year: "I saw your mother with her friends and got to meet the other residents and their families."
Even Yano's great-grandkids have fun. Seven-year-old Emma Colobong said she liked that in 2018, "we got to make crafts, and lots of things." She says she's looking forward to this year's event.
Tanaka sums up, "Whether they're shopping for gifts, looking for health information, or looking for a healthier lifestyle, each person will be able to bring something home."
And if you go, don't forget to look for this little guy, three-year-old Ronin Colobong. He's says he's planning on greeting everyone with a hug at this year's senior fair! That may be the best take-away of the day!
