Pedestrian crash survivors now suing city, driver and HPD officer involved
A couple who survived a deadly pedestrian crash in Kaka'ako in January is now suing the city, the driver and the police officer involved.
Lianna McCurdy and her boyfriend Daniel Verderame filed the lawsuit on Monday. They claim Honolulu Police Officer Sheldon Watts failed to follow protocol while chasing the alleged drunk driver, Alins Sumang.
The couple says the chase caused him to lose control of his pickup truck, then run over eight pedestrians at the intersection of Kamakee Street and Ala Moana Boulevard. That crash killed three people.
The lawsuit claims the officer violated the Honolulu Police Department's (HPD) motor vehicle pursuit policy which requires officers to turn on their sirens and lights during a chase and shut down pursuit if it becomes too dangerous.
