Watanabe Bakery closing down after 35 years
After 35 years, both Watanabe Bakery locations on Oahu on S. Beretania Street and Mapunapuna are closing for good because of new ownership. The bakery used to be called Fujipan until it was renamed in 2006.
Employees say mochi donuts and freshly baked bread are the best selling items.
"It's really nice because the community seems to also try to involve us as part of their family as we have our regular customers who we already kind of know what they're gonna buy before they even put it on the counter," Madisyn Sim, Watanabe Bakery employee, said.
A current co-owner hopes the new owners will reopen new bakery locations.
"Thank you guys for supporting us for all these years. hopefully Mr. Watanabe gets the bakery back as usual," David Mao, Watanabe Bakery co-owner, said.
The mochi and poi donuts at 7-Eleven on the island are also made in Watanabe's kitchen. You can still enjoy some of the brand's goods at MoDo at International Market Place in Waikiki.
