Early Thursday morning, workers with the Department of Land and Natural Resources and the Hawaii Police Department were seen removing a prayer house on Mauna Kea.

The Kanaka Ranger Program created the structure for data collection and safety. They say they're caught off-guard because they've spoken with DHHL representatives and multiple state and county lawmakers who supported the action.

Kanaka Ranger Program Executive Director Iokepa Ka'eo says he's 'utterly surprised,' by the enforcement.

The governor and other stakeholders will address the media later Thursday morning.
