KAAAWA, Hawaii - A Kaaawa man opens what he says is a first-of-its kind school in the state for aspiring comic book artists. Headed by the founder of the Hawaii Comic Book Alliance, Sam Campos, The Kaaawasaki Art Lab in Kaneohe plans to open its doors in May.

Campos, who is known as the Godfather of Hawaii Comics, along with Kalaheo High School Art teachers Art Wong and Mark Gould, created Hawaii's only comic book art school to meet the demand and interest in this medium- without having to fly to the mainland. Campos credits his work in comic books as the key that opened many doors for him, and he hopes to share that joy with others.

Focused on the art of drawing comic book sequential art, students will be introduced to drawing techniques including: character design, dynamic perspective, gesture drawing, thumbnails, and storyboard art. "The intimate setting allows students to get personalized attention from experienced published professionals from Hawaii," says Campos, who says he's excited to share his experience as a creator, designer, publisher and filmmaker.

"People all the time ask us at events if there is a school here for them to learn how to create comics. The only place I know of is at the opposite end of the United States, so we created the Kaaawasaki Art Lab," continues Campos.

The classes begin on May 4th. For more information, go to www.kaaawasaki.com.
