Kauai's new mayor seems to have a plan to help ease the minds of residents in Kauai's flood-effected area and the rest of the island.

Derek Kawakami was elected in November and he wants to remind the people that it wasn't just Kauai's North Shore that was hit, Koloa, Anahola, and other communities felt the storm's impact as well.

Mayor Kawakami told KITV4 that his administration can learn a lot from last April's storm and look to allocate resources to plan for severe weather events that may come.

"It's a challenge that's going to teach us a lot about who we are as an organization we're going to refine our operation to be able to respond better and to be more proactive," Kauai County Mayor Derek Kawakami said.

One goal on his radar is the reopening of Kuhio Highway.
