Late rally falls short for UH baseball in series decider vs UCR
The University of Hawaii baseball team stormed back with three runs in the final two innings on Sunday but fell one run short in a 4-3 defeat at UC Riverside in the series finale at the Riverside Sports Complex.
RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The University of Hawaii baseball team stormed back with three runs in the final two innings on Sunday but fell one run short in a 4-3 defeat at UC Riverside in the series finale at the Riverside Sports Complex.
Hawaii (14-19, 4-5 Big West) found itself in a 4-0 deficit to UC Riverside (11-22, 3-6 Big West) entering the eighth inning.
The 'Bows broke through with a run in the top of the eighth to cut the Highlanders' edge down to 4-1. Scotty Scott led off the inning with a single and Alex Baeza drove him in later in the frame with an RBI single.
In the ninth, Daylen Calicdan doubled and went on to score on an RBI single from Dallas Duarte. Scott's RBI single up the middle plated Duarte to make it 4-3 with one out before UC Riverside closer Jared Noonan got the final two outs.
UC Riverside's starting pitcher Abbott Haffar went 8-plus innings, allowing two earned runs on nine hits to keep Hawaii off the scoreboard for most of the game.
The Highlanders scored once in the third and twice in the fourth before tacking on one more in the sixth for a 4-0 lead.
Brennen Hancock extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a 3-for-4 day with Scott also racking up three hits, going 3-for-5 with a triple. Calicdan and Duarte notched two hits apiece for the Rainbow Warriors, who outhit the Highlanders, 11-8.
On the mound, starting pitcher Logan Pouelsen took the loss for UH, going 3.2 innings and allowing three runs on five hits with three strikeouts. Calvin Turchin took over, pitching 0.2 innings without giving up a run before Preseason All-American Dylan Thomas finished the final 3.2 innings with two strikeouts and one run allowed on one hit.
The 'Bows drop the series, 2-1, and are now 13-10 in the all-time series versus UC Riverside.
The Rainbow Warriors will return to Les Murakami Stadium to host Cal State Fullerton for a three-game set scheduled for Thursday, April 18 - Saturday, April 20.
