Akoni Pule Highway, Rt. 270,  between Upolu Airport Road and Hawi Town is now open following police presence in the area. Big Island Police thank the public for their understanding.


A shooting incident that occurred in the Kona district Wednesday, left one woman seriously injured -- Big Island Police continue to investigate.

Patrol officers responded to the Kona Community Hospital at around 7:07 p.m., where a female had been transported by a private vehicle for a single, non-life threatening gunshot wound.

Shortly after, officials began looking for the suspect identified as 41-year-old Walter Gomes III, of Kona.

Thursday morning around 2:05 a.m. Gomes was located by Kona officers. Upon contacting him, Gomes refused to comply and drove his vehicle toward police, striking a police vehicle. 

Three officers discharged their firearms, but the driver was able to flee.

The Police Department’s Area II Criminal Investigations Section is conducting a criminal investigation into the shooting and the Office of Professional Standards is conducting an administrative investigation.

Gomes was last seen driving a white 2003 Cadillac Escalade, license plate ZFC915.  

Officials warn the public from approaching him, as he is considered armed and dangerous. Instead the public is asked to call police at (808) 935-3311 to report his location.
