A Honolulu lawmaker is calling for a forensic audit of the City's rail project.
Councilmember Heidi Tsuneyoshi introduced a resolution Monday calling for the audit of the City and the Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation.
A forensic audit could result in criminal charges being filed, if wrongdoing is discovered.
According to Tsuneyoshi, two previous audits on the project clearly showed ethics violations, possible fraud, and unlawful actions.
"The hope that I really have is that once we get an honest account of what happened then we have a better place of knowing what to do now and how to best move forward," Honolulu City Councilmember Heidi Tsuneyoshi said.
The estimated costs of the project have skyrocketed from 5 billion dollars in 2012 to more than 9 billion dollars.
The resolution calls on the HART board to account for the audit in its budget.
