The Lihue Post Office relocation has been cancelled
The U.S. Postal Service will not relocate the Lihue Post Office.
Initial plans to move the office from its Rice Street location to the Lihue Carrier Annex were met by opposition from the community.
Kaua'i County officials and Congressional delegates, spent the past two years researching the possible impact of the move.
"We are infusing a lot of resources into our urban core, trying to revitalize our main streets and that post office is a key component to maintaining a sense of place and rural character," Kaua'i County Mayor Derek Kawakami said.
Mayor Kawakami adds the County is trying to create a walkable, bikeable, and pedestrian-friendly community in Lihue.
