Woman who killed 6-month-old baby in hit-and-run, sentenced to 5 years in prison
"I wanted her to still pay for what she did, but it's not going to bring back my son. She has to live with it for the rest of her life. It's just hard everyday," said Hicks.
HONOLULU - It was an emotional day in court Thursday as a mother and her family faced the woman who killed their 6-month-old baby during a hit-and-run in Waimanalo.
A judge sentenced 28-year-old Annie Akau to five years behind bars -- with credit served after she pleaded guilty to the fatal crash.
In December 2016 Akau struck Dijanna Hicks and her two children with her pick up truck, and took off. The family was in a marked crosswalk on Kalanianaole Highway.
6-month-old Donovon later died in the hospital.
Before taken into custody Thursday, Hicks told Akau that she forgave her.
"I wanted her to still pay for what she did, but it's not going to bring back my son. She has to live with it for the rest of her life. It's just hard every day," said Hicks.
Akau has also been ordered to pay $30,000 in restitution, and several hundred in fees.
