The Hawaii Board on Geographic Names received three name proposals so far to rename fissure 8 on Hawaii Island.
Puu Leilani (hill of Leilani), proposed by Dale A. Smith of Washoe Valley, NV
Puu O Aliaau (hill of Aliaau), proposed by Gary E. Smith of Kilauea on Kauai.
Keahiluawalu O Pele, proposed by Mahealani Kaiwikuamoo Kekuaokalani-Henry of Pahoa, HI
The board plans on giving a status report in the next seven to 10 days, and is targeting to name the fissure by the end of Summer 2019.
The process to adapt a new name will include public meetings for community input sometime from April to June 2019.
Based on those discussions, the board will deliberate on all information available from preliminary research and public input at a scheduled board meeting before deciding on a name at a subsequent board meeting.
