HONOLULU (KITV) - As Hurricane Olivia nears Hawaii, the Hawaii State Department of Education is advising parents and guardians that public school schedule and after school programs may change due to the storm.

Hana High and Elementary School are the only schools scheduled to close Tuesday, September 11th.

All after school activities and programs on the Big Island and Maui are canceled Tuesday, September 11th as well. To view the letter sent to parents, click here.

“We appreciate the scheduling difficulties that school-related cancellations can have, so we ask our parents and guardians to remain flexible and to check HIDOE’s website for the latest updates throughout this week,” said Superintendent Dr. Christina Kishimoto. “The safety of our students and staff is the highest priority and will guide any decision to alter school schedules.”

Should shelters be of need during the event, HIDOE says they are working with emergency agencies to facilitate the use of certain campuses for evacuation space.
