Managers of the controversial Thirty Meter Telescope have delayed their decision on whether to build on Mauna Kea or seek an alternate location. The decision was initially scheduled for this week. The Board of Governors has decided to wait until legal and regulatory options conclude. The Canary Islands are the backup option. 

“We continue to assess the ongoing situation as we work toward a decision,” said Ed Stone, Executive Director of the TMT International Observatory.

TMT has come under fire for building on a site many Native Hawaiians consider sacred.
