KAILUA, Hawaii - Agnes Portuguese Bake Shop in Kailua closed its doors for good on Saturday. It's known for its malasadas.

The final customers were happy to get their hands on the sweet stuff. The popular Windward bakery has been in business for almost 50 years.

The owners say it's time to move on to other ventures and add they are thankful for their loyal customers. Co-owner Nom DeMello says, "One of the nicest things about this whole experience for me is being able to see people coming in with kids; those kids growing up, and now bringing in their kids. We've lost a lot of friends and gained a lot of friends."

Customer Shauna Hirota says, "We are just so grateful for all they did for our community and for filling our tummies with yummies."

According to Pacific Business News, The Beet Box Cafe -- a vegetarian restaurant on Oahu's North Shore -- will open a second location in the bakery's space in March.

DeMello tells Island News, don't be surprised if Agnes Portuguese Bake Shop pops up somewhere else. He says people are interested in buying the name and the tasty recipes!
