HONOLULU - The federal government is investigating what it calls a suspicious monk seal death on Molokai.

An administrator with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says the seal died about a month ago.  NOAA would not confirm where the seal died and it wouldn’t say why the case is considered suspicious.

Neither NOAA nor the state Department of Land and Natural Resources released information about the case until Island News called on Monday.

In the past, these kinds of cases have been widely publicized.  Rewards of tens of thousands of dollars have been offered.  In fact, last March a $10,000 reward was offered for information about a suspicious monk seal death on Kauai.

NOAA tells us it was hoping people would volunteer information if the death didn’t get a lot of publicity.
