HALEIWA, Hawaii - The 2016 Quiksilver In Memory Of Eddie Aikau big wave surf contest started on Thursday, Feb. 25 at Waimea Bay.

The event was held in monster surf with wave faces topping 50 feet. Tens of thousands of spectators crowded the beach and hillsides at Waimea to witness the action. Florence had the highest point total on any wave scoring 96 points during his second one-hour heat.

The winner -- North Shore surfer John John Florence. The prize -- $75,000.

Australian Ross Clarke-Jones, who won the event in 2000, finished second.

This is the ninth time the competition has run in the event's 31-year history. The last one happened in 2009.
