Today the Honolulu City Council Committee on Zoning and Planning extended a bill providing extra enforcement on illegal bed and breakfasts.

The Department of Planning and Permitting went before the committee to ask for a 120 day extension for the bill. Five new employees hired last year began working this month.

People opposed to all the short-term vacation rentals are glad to see the extension, but they also say those employees will be spread too thin to make a big difference.

“If you have several thousand illegal operations and you have to personally go out and visit each one and contest people and interview people and so forth, you can see it’s not going to go anywhere even with five more people,” said Larry Bartley with Save Oahu’s Neighborhoods.

The new employees were hired under a budget increase of $300,000.
