Kauai police have confirmed that a female visitor drowned Monday afternoon in waters off Lumahai Beach on Kauai’s North Shore.

She is believed to be a 31-year-old female of New York.

Shortly before 4 p.m., witnesses called police when they noticed a woman being swept out to sea from the mouth of the Lumahai River. Lifeguards from the Hanalei Pavilion tower responded to the scene within minutes via Jet Ski.

When they located the woman, she was unresponsive in the water. Lifeguards immediately brought her to shore and began administering CPR with the help of Hanalei firefighters.

A bystander with a pickup truck helped rescuers transport the woman from the beach to a nearby parking lot where awaiting medics continued CPR. She was transported to Wilcox Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Police say the woman was alone at the time of the incident. Investigators believe she was attempting to cross the river when she apparently lost her footing and was swept out. Foul play is not suspected in the cause of her death.

This is Kauai’s fifth drowning of the year.
