Hokulea crew members are in place, just waiting for the word when they will leave the small island nation of Mauritius and head for Madagascar and South Africa.

Right now, it looks as though the canoe will leave Saturday.

A lot of training and research has gone into this next leg and into choosing the people who will sail the canoe in what may be Hokulea's most dangerous voyage ever.

While they need crew members with strength and stamina, Navigator Nainoa Thompson says they also needed seasoned, experienced crew members.

“You need those who’ve been through the storm because you want in these kind of situations everybody when things get rough or the day goes bad, you want the best out of leadership,” said Thompson.
