Members of Hawaii's congressional delegation announced legislation to award the Congressional Gold Medal to Filipino Veterans of World War II.

It's part of a movement to obtain national recognition for their instrumental wartime service to the U.S.

At the time of the war, the Philippines was part of the U.S. as a commonwealth.

Congressman Mark Takai says this movement has been a long time coming.

“We back then made a commitment to you, to all of you, that if you served and fought with us, that we would welcome you with open arms into our country, provide family reunification, provide benefits, and today, as General Taguba said, award you with a distinguished Congressional Gold Medal,” said Rep. Mark Takai.

Today is also the start of Filipino American Heritage Month.
