Skateboarder, 20, critical after being hit by truck on Mamalohoa Highway in Waimea

WAIMEA, Hawaii (KITV4) -- A skateboarder is in critical condition after being hit by a pickup truck on the Mamalahoa Highway in Waimea, Wednesday night.

First responders were called out to the crash around 8:15 p.m. Police say the skateboarder was riding in the westbound lane of traffic on Mamalahoa Highway when he was struck from behind by a 1988 Nissan Hardbody pickup.

The skateboarder has only been identified by police as a 20-yearold Kamuela man. He was taken to the North Hawaii Community Hospital in critical condition.

The driver of the pickup, a 31-year-old Kamuela man, was not injured in the crash. Investigators do not believe speed or impairment were factors in the crash.

Police are searching for anyone who may have witnessed the crash. Anyone with information is asked to call 808-326-4646 and use extension 229. Witnesses can also email adam.roberg@hawaiicounty.gov.
