Governor Josh Green's second pick to head DHHL advances

Four Senators voted in favor: Shimabukuro, Keohokalole, Richards, and Ihara (yes vote with reservations). Senator Kurt Fevella voted No.

Watson spent hours in the hot seat, as Senators vetted him to lead the DHHL.

Among those who testified in support of Watson included former colleagues, a department commissioner, and homeland beneficiaries.

Some questioned whether Watson would have a conflict of interest if he got the job.

That's because after he served as DHHL director in the 90s -- he launched a non-profit development group that has worked on projects with the department.

Watson promised that if he is confirmed, he would step down as president of the non-profit and recuse himself from any partnerships it would have with the department in the future.

Watson's nomination now heads to the full senate.

During his time as DHHL director, Watson helped develop 3,100 residential lots.

He is the second DHHL nominee to go before state lawmakers.

“We are pleased that Kali Watson has been recommended to move forward in the process for final vote by the full Senate,” said Governor Josh Green. “He has a proven record of leading the department in the past and the experience and relationships in place to make great strides, where strides are clearly needed. We look forward to his official confirmation.”
