Diane Ako

Diane Ako has spent most of her adult life in a TV newsroom. An award-winning journalist, she anchors and reports for KITV4 Island News. She was also a newscaster in California, Pennsylvania, and New Mexico.

Her reporting has garnered ten first place awards from the Society of Professional Journalists’ Hawaii Chapter, and four Emmy nominations from the San Francisco/Northern California Chapter of The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.

Ako likes inspiring, informing, and connecting with people. She is grateful to be part of the island community in this way and hopes to carry the mantle with integrity and meaning.

The Kamehameha Schools alumna earned a B.A. in Communications from Menlo College and an M.A. in Political Science from University of Hawaii at Manoa.

She is a mom; an accredited yoga teacher; a citizen scientist with a marine biology group studying endemic 'opae ula shrimp; a Shinto shrine maiden for Daijingyu Temple of Hawaii; and a board member for one of the nation's longest running LGBTQ film festivals, the Honolulu Rainbow Film Festival.
