Who's the popular weather man many are talking about?
Mike Cantin, the face of Flossie
He's been working with the National Weather Service in Hawaii for three years but until recently, he's been unheard of. So who is this new "weather man" that everyone's talking about?
Meet Mike Cantin.
"My mom would say the Cantins, we can talk, we can even talk to a tree stump if we wanted to," says Mike Cantin, warning coordinator meteorologist for the National Weather Service.
You may remember his face from recent newscasts, but it's his words and presentation that has people talking.
On Twitter, one person writes,"Mike Cantin is like the guy."
Another says, he's "articulate and akamai."
On Facebook, the list of positive comments is long. One person says KITV should offer him a job, but Cantin says the credit should go to his teammates.
"Behind the scenes we've got a great group of folks keeping the equipment running, making the forecasts, making the important decisions and helping me get that information out to you," says Cantin.
Understanding Cantin's approach to weather forecasting is as simple as hearing where he's from, Strafford, N.H. Growing up in a town of about 2,500 people molded his approach to life.
"For me, it's always been about simplicity and how I'd be able to make things simple in my mind and be able to communicate them from there," says Cantin.
It also helps to have a background in television news. Cantin put in two years as a meteorologist at news stations in Idaho and Wyoming. He later moved from state to state with the National Weather Service until a job opening three years ago in Hawaii.
The father of four has lived in eight states in thirteen years with his wife. He lives in Maili and expects to stay in Hawaii for a while, but don't expect him to swap jobs anytime soon.
"You don't necessarily want to see me on TV. When you see me something either bad has happened or is about to happen, so hopefully I can be helpful in sharing the information, but if you don't see me for a while, that's probably a good sign," says Cantin.
