Weather conditions continue to deteriorate on the Big Island. Managers of hotels Hilo Seaside Hotel and Uncle Billy's Hotel, both Hilo and Kailua Kona locations, have evacuated guests to nearby shelters.
Officials say Uncle Billy's Hilo location had roughly 80 guests evacuate to Hilo High School and Waiakea High School shelters.
An Uncle Billy's Hotel manager says the decision to evacuate was all about safety. They were worried about the structure of the hotel, which is made up of concrete and wood. Guests will not be charged for the night.
Security guards say water has risen at least a foot near the hotel as winds have increased to about 25 to 35 mph.
Reports show winds in Kailua Kona as high as 45 mph.
A flood advisory has also been issued for South Hilo and Puna areas with a power outage affecting at least 34 homes in the Puna district.
Many shoreside businesses have prepared for the high waves by putting up sand bags.
