WAILUKU, Hawaii -

American Red Cross volunteers closed up a shelter Friday morning for displaced Maui residents at the Hannibal Tavares Community Center in Pukalani, according to Maui County officials.

The shelter opened up Thursday night while Maui was in a flash flood warning for those who had to leave their homes due to flooding and to motorists who could not make it home due to the closed roads.

Two residents who were unable to return home spent part of the night at the shelter.

The Maui County Fire Department says weather-related calls began at 3:30 p.m. Thursday and the last engine returned at 9:15 p.m.  Crews from Makawao, Kula, Kahului, and Paia responded to various flooding calls during this time.
