4.25-inch hailstone largest ever to fall in Hawaii

The National Weather Service confirmed that a 4.25-inch hailstone that fell during a recent severe thunderstorm was the largest ever to fall in Hawaii.

The stone was measured after a hailstorm on March 9 over Kaneohe and Kailua.

Numerous reports of two to three inch diameter hail and larger were reported on that day.

The National Weather Service investigated a hailstone reportedly larger than three inches in diameter which was collected by a Windward Oahu resident in the Aikahi neighborhood.

Upon inspecting the hailstone it was apparent the stone was much larger than three inches.

The final measure of the hailstone was 4.25 inches long, 2.25 inches tall and 2 inches wide.

According to hail report records for Hawaii kept back to 1950, the previous hailstone was one inch in diameter.
