20- To 25-Foot Waves Hit North Shore

Surf Expected To Peak On Wednesday

POSTED: 9:50 am HST November 25, 2009

Big surf hit the North Shore of Oahu on Wednesday with faces of 20- to 20-feet high as the National Weather Service placed parts of the state on a high surf warning.

Officials closed Ke'iki Beach to swimmers because of a 15-foot shore break. The waves were choppy and not considered good for surfing along much of the coast except for Waimea Bay, officials said.

Occasional 30-foot waves were seen.

Forecasters placed north- and west-facing shores of Niihau, Kauai, Oahu and Molokai under a high surf warning along with the north shore of Maui.

West-facing shores could see waves of 14- to 20-feet high, according to the NWS.

The swell is expected to peak later in the day before falling to advisory levels on Thursday and Friday, forecasters said.
