HONOLULU -- The National Weather Service on Thursday afternoon extended the flash flood watch for all Hawaiian Islands until Friday afternoon and canceled the flash flood warning for parts of Oahu.A storm system north of Hawaii sent high surf to the islands as heavy rains surround the state.Heavy rains hovered around the North Shore area on Oahu. Downpours soaked the Kahuku, Laie and Hauula areas, forecasters said. Debris under the Punaluu Bridge prompted officials to keep a close eye on that stream.At one point, there was a foot of water running off Kamehameha Highway by the Waikane Bridge.Forecasters extended a high surf advisory for the north- and east-facing shores of Kauai and Oahu until Friday evening.Kauai officials warned the public to stay clear of the potentially dangerous conditions along north- and east-facing shores that could see waves of 12- to 18-feet high.High surf prompted officials on the Big Island to close Bayfront Highway in Hilo for hours. Surfers took advantage of the large swells and flocked to Hilo Bay. The barge will try to go into port on Friday, the company said.The heavy rains that forecasters said could pour over the islands moved over Hilo on Thursday and a cell south of Maui County and Oahu moved north.
