Officials Close Hilo Harbor As Storm Nears
Closure Leaves Cruise Ship Without Port

HILO, Hawaii -- Officials closed the port of Hilo on Tuesday morning ahead of Hurricane Flossie.It was a "borderline call that the Coast Guard made," according to transportation officials.Hilo Harbor was closed at 6 a.m.The biggest impact for that was to Norwegian Cruise Line's Pride of Hawaii that was scheduled to arrive at 7 a.m. It went back out to sea.The ship is scheduled to arrive in Maui on Wednesday.The closure also affected several cargo ships and barges.Large waves are expected to hit the island ahead of Hurricane Flossie. Hawaii County Civil Defense officials said that they are concerned that the storm could send waves as big as 25 feet onto shore on the Big Island's south side.
