HONOLULU -- The National Weather Service has extended the flash flood warning for the island of Maui until at least 2:15 p.m. Monday. The warning has been extended to the Kipahulu area of southeast Maui, where a gauge showed rapidly rising water in Oheo Gulch.Heavy rain is also falling in the Kipahulu Gulch, Wainapanapa State Park, Nahiku, Hana and Hamoa areas of the Valley Isle.Forecasters are warning area residents to move to higher ground, and to avoid streams and low-lying areas that are prone to flooding. The weather service also said the heavy rain could cause mud and rockslides in steep areas. Runoff levels could also remain high for several hours. The heavy rains are coming from a slow-moving cold front that dumped rain on parts of Oahu Sunday. The showers are being enhanced by a trough digging in from the northwest, which is drawing up additional moisture from former Tropical Depression 4C, southwest of the Big Island, which may see heavy rain and isolated thundershowers later Monday night and Tuesday. The front is forecast to linger over the central Hawaiian islands until Wednesday, when it will be pushed eastward by an upper level disturbance.
