HONOLULU -- A traffic report released on Tuesday puts Honolulu near the top of a list no one wants to be on.The report lists the top 100 U.S. cities with the worst traffic congestion. Honolulu ranks second behind Los Angeles."I'm not surprised," Aiea motorist Duncan Akana said.Akana and Mahealani Millwood drive from town to Aiea in the afternoon. They said they try to outsmart the traffic."If we see that the traffic going to Aiea is really bad, we will get on the Pali Highway. Take Pali all the way to H-3 Freeway. Catch H-3 and come back into the Halawa and it's still quicker," Millwood said.Lui Nuuanu said he lives and works in town to avoid long, slow commutes."To me time is a little bit more valuable than money, if I can save even an hour everyday," Nuuanu said. The Inrix Traffic Scoreboard ranks traffic congestion in the top 100 cities by monitoring GPS systems and other mobile devices used across the country."If you have a random 30-minute commute in Honolulu you have to add over 80 hours of delay each year to your commute," said Rick Shumann, of Inrix Traffic Scoreboard.Hawaii Department of Transportation spokeswoman Tammy Mori said the DOT is seeking state and federal funding for highway improvement projects."We just recently finished the Fort Weaver widening project, which is a huge relief for those in the Ewa region. We also opened North-South Road," Mori said.
