French Tennis Player Montcourt Dies

(Sports Network) - French tennis player Mathieu Montcourt died overnight. He was 24 years old.

The French Tennis Federation issued a statement Tuesday, but said a cause of death was not immediately known. An autopsy is expected to be conducted.

"The French Tennis Federation is literally in shock after learning the death of Mathieu Montcourt, occurred on the night of Monday to Tuesday," the FFT said in a statement. "Mathieu was a young man enthusiastic, passionate, very engaging, highly appreciated for his kindness and politeness."

Montcourt, a Paris native, was ranked 119th in the world. He spent most of 2009 playing on the challenger tour, but qualified for the French Open, where he lost in the second round to Radek Stepanek.
