About 36 million Americans say they download either music or video online. About half of them use services other than peer-to-peer networks or paid services, according to a survey by the Pew Internet and American Life Project.

In the survey, 27 percent of 1,421 adult Internet users said they pull in content.

Nineteen percent of current music and video downloaders told the group they have downloaded files from someone else's digital music player. About 28 percent said they get music and video files via e-mail and instant messages.

In the recent survey, 43 percent of current downloaders said they're more likely to use a paid service than peer-to-peer software. That number was 24 percent last year.

Blogs and review sites were other sources of content.

The author of the study said these types of delivery are harder to monitor than other file-sharing.

Pew also found that 49 percent of Americans and 53 percent of Internet users think companies that operate file-sharing networks should be held liable for piracy. Eighteen percent of the population said they don't know who to blame. More than 40 percent don't think government crackdowns will be very effective.
