WAILUKU, Hawaii - A severe winter storm that is expected to impact the entire state of Hawaii is quickly approaching.

As a result, the County of Maui has closed all South Maui parks, including Baldwin and Kanaha beach parks Sunday.

Maui County is bracing for high surf and heavy winds, particularly Molokai and the northern and southern coastlines. Residents and visitors are advised to stay indoors.

“It’s always better to be safe, than sorry,” Mayor Michael Victorino said. “Weather forecasters expect coastal flooding along with powerful wind gusts that may down trees, power lines and even blow over vehicles.”

West Maui parks may also close -- including Papalaua Wayside Park -- and advise the public to reschedule hiking or camping trips.

It is also recommended that residents bring in any loose belongings from outside, like potted plants or furniture that may blow away.

Weather conditions will be monitored throughout the weened, and county officials say they are ready to respond to any emergencies.
